Mask dances of Cirebon
Tari Topeng Cirebon, or mask dances of Cirebon, are the oldest
form of West Javanese dance, and come from the north coast.
These dances are performed in full costume but are edited
versions of the original traditional dances, which would traditionally
be accompanied by a live gamelan orchestra and last about
one hour.
Anna Ingleby learned these
dances while living in Indonesia for two years, 1996-98. Her
teacher was Ibu Nunung Nurasih who is from a family of mask
dancers and now lives and teaches in Bandung, West Java.
The following dances are available:
PANJI, a pure, uncorrupted fluid character with minimal
movements, like a newly born baby.
PAMINDO, a flirtatious teenager, not yet aware of
what is good and bad, with bird-like movements.
RUMYANG, a maturer version of Pamindo, more wise and
controlled.
TUMENGGUNG, a character that has already established
his position in the world, and is strong and active.
KLANA, an evil king, whose greed knows no bounds,
and whose power has become too great.
Duration: Each dance varies between 10 and 15 mins
Performed by 1 dancer to pre-recorded gamelan music
