Beverley has long been a town of sanctuary since the Middle Ages. Famous sanctuary stones stand at its edges and a towering Minster at its heart, marking an ancient boundary line where fugitives could seek shelter from the law. Today, Beverley remains a town of sanctuary but of a different kind – as a safe place to live and work; as a place to escape away to on holiday; as a place of creative sanctuary – a town filled with arts and culture.

For the online Beverley Puppet Festival in 2020, we created a pilot outreach project with care home & sheltered housing residents in Beverley. This consisted of a mini shadow theatre kit being left with a staff member for residents in each home – complete with lamp, torch, puppets, reflective items & scenery. Remote advice was offered, and an online tutorial, but due to lockdown it was really the proactive staff member in each place who made the project happen. Photos and video clips were sent back to Beverley Puppet Festival, which can be viewed in the Beverley Puppet Festival Participant Gallery.

In 2021, in partnership with Beverley Minster, this project developed into “Sanctuary in Creativity” – reaching not only the care homes but also partnering up with local primary schools to form intergenerational friendships and develop stories, using the Minster’s Sanctuary films as conversation starters. These films were re-enactments of the stories of mediaeval fugitives who came to Beverley. With some help from Ali Bodley, Beverley Minster’s Outreach officer of that time, three schools were engaged who were paired up with four residential homes. We created six mini shadow theatre kits to extend on the successful model of the 2020 remote Education project – and extra puppets were added to the existing kits of two care homes who took part again. The pre-made puppets served as examples to show how further ones could be made.

Schools were suffering from whole class bubbles being suddenly sent home at any time, and care homes had staffing shortages due to many self-isolating – also because the reintroduction of family member visits under very strict rules meant much reduced activity time for any staff members involved. Nevertheless, we found this work to be extremely valuable at this time in lighting up people’s lives. Those who were able to participate thoroughly enjoyed it and gained confidence through it.

As a pilot project, this was intended to discover best practise for developing future intergenerational puppetry projects. We learnt a great deal, not least in logistics! We are keen to find out ways to develop our findings in future projects in York and Hull. We firmly believe that all expressive arts are a great tool for intergenerational work – and that this is of immense benefit both to older people (particularly those who are less mobile in care homes) and to children. The capacity for puppets to allow safe expression, (through participants in effect being masked by an alternative identity), is something which we need longer to properly investigate.

Pictures can replace 1000 words!

From May to July 2019, Anna Ingleby collaborated with opera singer & intergenerational specialist Thea Jacob (of Songbox) and community musician Joe Christie to work on three strands of this intergenerational pilot puppetry project. This combined singing, music making and puppetry – resulting in puppet stories captured on video, based on the memories and dreams of the participants. At Red Lodge Retirement Home residents worked with home educating families; girls from Tang Hall Community Centre Youth club worked in the shared lounge of the sheltered housing in Glen Lodge flatlets in Tang Hall and at taster sessions were held at York Travellers Trust.

Following on from the work in York, Anna collaborated with Haviel Perdana, Rachel Harris, Sarah Johnson, Phil Codd, Frances Kelly & Susanna Samanek in two further strands in Hull. Stories were gathered from gentlemen of Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group and then developed into videos through puppetry workshops held with children from Mersey Primary School.

The final strand was a series of intergenerational workshops at Scrapstore’s Creative Hub, which accompanied Indigo Moon Theatre’s Christmas performances of Aladdin and Jungle Book. Special tickets were given to 10 audience members per show, who came as intergenerational pairs (children accompanied by a grandparent or equivalently aged friend or relative). These participants made shadow puppets and filmed a collective story at the end of each workshop… based on characters inspired by memories, who were then made into animals.
The post Suitcase of Memories & Dreams appeared first on Indigo Moon Theatre.
The post Suitcase of Memories & Dreams appeared first on Indigo Moon Theatre.

In 2020, as part of the online Beverley Puppet Festival, we were delighted to launch a pilot project developing a unique, remote creative experience. We prepared kits and sent them out around the area to local care homes so residents could create their own shadow theatre!

Thanks to the dedication of care home workers Elaine at Figham House and Jimmy & Amber at New House, residents created shadow theatre using our pre-prepared kits, a video tutorial and messages from outside.

Shadow theatre is generally the most accessible form of puppetry as very spectacular results can be achieved in the shortest time using the minimum of materials and the simplest of methods. There are very many materials that can be used to make shadow puppets, as well as ways to make shadows of many different qualities. The most common type of shadow puppet workshop involves making very simple puppets out of thin card and using coloured cellophane or lighting gel to create colour. Many other ways of casting shadows can be explored however, including the use of our own bodies and different light sources.

Our video tutorial shared creative ideas to help get residents started, instructions on how to create their shadow theatre and top tips on how to make their puppets come to life and tell their story! You can see the full tutorial below.

Residents were then invited to share videos and images of their shadow theatre work, from simple dance casts on the walls to a singing puppet, to stories told for family and friends outside, have a look at some of the wonderful creations here!
